It has been signaled for a long time, but the day is here. The Google Play Store no longer lets you buy music.
The Google Play Store Stops Selling Music
As spotted by Thurrott, the music store on Google Play is no longer available. You cannot use it to buy music to keep.
The reason this is happening is because Google wants everyone to transfer to YouTube Music, its new streaming service. You can easily transfer your music to the new platform by visiting the YouTube Music transfer page.
Google had announced that this was happening. In fact, it gave the deadline of late August, so the extra couple of weeks are a bonus.
To export your previously purchased music and your wishlist and reviews, head over to Google Takeout. You can also still log in to your Google Play Music account if you want to delete your library and recommendations history.
If you decide to take no action, Google says:
By the end of the year, you will lose access to the Google Play Music app. If you decide not to take any of the actions above, all Play Music data that is not transferred or downloaded will eventually be deleted.
Where Can I Buy Music Online?
With this news, Google no longer sells music anywhere. The company is taking the streaming-only approach.
If you still like to own your music, don’t worry. There are plenty of other places where you can buy music online, including from Amazon and the iTunes Store.
