5 Ways to Discover What’s New on Netflix | MakeUseOf

Netflix is constantly adding new TV shows and movies to its catalog to keep its hundreds of millions of subscribers worldwide entertained. Even if you’ve binge-watched everything of interest, there’s always something fresh coming up. The problem lies in finding that new content.

Although Netflix heavily promotes its big-name series and blockbuster movies, hundreds of other titles are added to the streaming service every month. In this article, we explain the best ways to discover new and upcoming Netflix content, so you don’t miss out on great viewing.

1. Skip the Netflix Homepage

The first, but far from the best, place to discover what’s new to watch on Netflix is naturally Netflix.com.

The homepage features a row of New Releases, which is supposed to highlight TV shows and movies that have recently been added to Netflix. In reality, only a few of these entries are likely to be new to the streaming service.

Netflix often promotes its original and most popular series as “new” because it detects from your viewing history that you haven’t watched them. Clicking Explore All to view the full New Releases section only makes distinguishing between old and new even trickier.

Ignore this section and click the Latest link at the top of the page. Here you’ll find a proper roundup of new TV shows and films on Netflix, as well as series that have recently added new episodes and seasons.

Usefully, you can also see what new content is coming to Netflix this week and next, including the days and dates it will be added. Hover your mouse over a title and click the Remind me button to receive a notification when it becomes available.

2. Check the Netflix Mobile and TV Apps

As with the Netflix website, the Netflix app for Android and iOS features a New Releases row on the home screen. But again, this is both deceptive and pretty useless for finding new content.

If you’re using the app on an Android tablet or iPad, tap the Recently Added option at the top of the screen to view a selection of new shows and movies on Netflix. However, this isn’t comprehensive and is more interested in promoting “trending” and original titles.

On an Android phone or iPhone, the app offers a more useful Coming Soon option at the bottom of the screen. Tap this to swipe through a list of upcoming content, which includes release dates, trailers, and a Remind Me button.

In the Netflix app for Windows 10, all you get is the bog-standard New Releases row.

3. Follow Netflix on Social Media

Netflix compensates for its misleading New Releases section with an active social media presence, which provides frequent updates about newly added TV shows and movies.

Follow Netflix on Facebook and the page will automatically default to the official account and language for your region. This lets you see relevant posts about new content, get more insight than on the Netflix website, and interact with other viewers.

Similarly, the @Netflix Twitter account delivers a constant stream of news about the latest additions, complemented by video clips and GIFs. It also retweets other Netflix accounts such as @NetflixFilm, which helpfully lists all the new movies being added each month.

If you’re outside the US, Netflix has separate local accounts for most regions including @NetflixUK for the UK and Ireland, @Netflix_CA for Canada, @NetflixANZ for Australia and New Zealand, and @NetflixIndia for, yep, you guessed it, India.

It’s also worth following the Netflix Instagram account or the relevant regional version. As well as providing release dates for upcoming shows and movies, Netflix Instagram posts make great use of image galleries, videos, and stories to whet your viewing appetite.

4. Bookmark What’s On Netflix

Hundreds of websites now preview what’s coming up on Netflix, but none do it more thoroughly than What’s On Netflix.

This unofficial site’s excellent What’s New On Netflix blog is updated daily with details of every new title that’s been added to the streaming service. Entries include summaries of shows and movies, cast information, run times, trailers, IMDb ratings (where available), and links to watch directly on Netflix.

What’s On Netflix helpfully tells you the number of new titles added each week and month, highlights upcoming releases in its Coming Soon section, and reveals what Netflix is planning to remove and when.

You can access regional versions of What’s On Netflix for the UK, Canada, and Australia via its homepage. Follow the site on social media, sign up for its newsletter, or subscribe to its RSS feed to receive regular updates. Or just bookmark it and visit every day.

Almost as good, though not as slickly designed, is New On Netflix. This also provides a daily roundup of newly added TV shows and films, with cast information, star ratings, and direct links to Netflix. The site covers the same countries as What’s On Netflix and lets you search the full catalogs for each one.

5. Track Netflix Shows Using Reelgood

Reelgood is a fantastic free way to combine all of your streaming services in one place. Available as a website and an app for Android, iOS, and smart TVs, it makes it easy to find good stuff to watch, and also lets you track new content on Netflix.

Sign up with Reelgood via its website and select Netflix in its list of services, along with any other streaming providers you use. Click Save and you’ll be taken to a page showing popular, trending, and new TV shows and films, among many other categories.

Click the New, Coming, Leaving link at the top of the page for a full roundup of fresh streaming content. Select New On in the first dropdown menu and Netflix in the second to see what’s new on the service this week. Scroll down to browse what was added in previous weeks.

Choose Coming To in the first menu to view new Netflix releases over the next month. Hover over a TV show or movie and select Track Series or Want To See to be notified when it’s available to stream.

Reelgood rival JustWatch offers another effective way to find out what’s new on Netflix, and is also available online and as an Android and iOS app. Whereas Reelgood only supports US and UK streaming services, JustWatch covers 45 countries.

Select Netflix from the choice of providers, then click or tap New. Scroll through the reverse-chronological list of new TV episodes, series, and movies. Choose Watch Now to open a title on Netflix, or add it to your JustWatch watchlist to stream later.
