The Surface Duo is one of Microsoft’s more ambitious projects, but only people in the US can get one for themselves; that is, until now. Microsoft has made an announcement that it will bring the two-screened wonder to other countries soon.
The Future for the Surface Duo
Microsoft announced its plans on Windows Blogs, under a post titled “the year ahead for Surface Duo.” If you’re a fan of the Surface Duo, it covers a lot of juicy details and is worthy of a read.
Of particular note is Microsoft’s confirmation that the Surface Duo is ready to leave its US market:
Since introducing Surface Duo in August 2020, people have asked when we would make this product available outside of the US. We’re pleased to share that in early 2021, we’ll be offering Surface Duo in Canada, United Kingdom, France and Germany.
While it’s not quite a global rollout, it is good news to see that the Surface Duo is finally making its way outside of the US.
Microsoft’s Slow but Steady Push for the Surface Duo
Microsoft hasn’t had the best of launches with the Surface Duo. First, with it being a US exclusive for a while, a lot of international fans could only look on during release day and watch YouTube unboxing videos.
That’s not to say that the US crowd was particularly excited either. While the original reaction wasn’t completely devastating, it was definitely not a good reception for Microsoft’s new revolutionary two-screen device.
However, critical reviews did reveal a problem with the Surface Duo that Microsoft could fix: the buggy operating system. Reviewers did seem to like the hardware, but the software needed some work.
Fortunately, software fixes are a lot easier than hardware ones. Software problems can be fixed with an update; hardware issues require physical repairs or recalls. As such, Microsoft has been working on pushing updates for the Surface Duo.
We’ll have to see if the updates allow a warmer reception for the Surface Duo when it arrives in other counties. For now, however, we’ll have to wait and watch for a more specific release date in 2021.
A Second Chance for the Surface Duo
While the Surface Duo’s US release wasn’t a huge success, Microsoft has patched up the problems that plagued it on release day. We can only wait and see if it’s enough to win over crowds in Europe and Canada.
If you live in one of the mentioned countries and you’re curious about the Surface Duo, why not give it a look before you buy? There are plenty of videos on it, such as YouTube reviews and even Microsoft’s own demo of the device.
