Minisforum Make Most of Mini-PC Market With New Hardware Reveal

Leading mini-PC manufacturers MINISFORUM has revealed a new mini-PC featuring Intel 10th Generation processors, adding to an extensive range of existing hardware options.

The Minisforum U850 packs a significant amount of hardware into a tiny package, catering to home enthusiasts and businesses alike, representing a significant upgrade on the previous iteration.

New Minisforum U850 Mini-PC Revealed

The new Minisforum U850 will target the mid-to-high-end mini-PC sector.

The U850 includes an Intel Core i5-10210U processor, which comes with four cores, eight threads, and a base clock speed of 1.60GHz. But while the base clock speed sounds a little low, the processor’s maximum frequency is 4.20GHz, making it suitable for a wide range of situations.

Intel’s Core-10210U features a 6MB Intel Smart Cache, which should allow for faster processing, too. The processor includes Intel Iris Plus 655 onboard graphics, allowing Full HD streaming and video playback along with some light gaming.

Handily, the U850 comes with a standard 16GB DDR4 RAM, but there is also support for up to 64GB RAM if required. In terms of storage, the Minisforum U850 includes an M.2 256GB PCIe SSD. Again, this can be expanded, with support for up to 2TB in storage, including HDDs.

Another thing to note regarding the U850 is power usage. The predecessor to the U850, the U820, used the 8th Generation Intel Core i5-8259U CPU, which has a TDP of 28W. The newer Intel Core i5-10210U drops down to 15W, consuming less power—handy for those with large-scale deployments or even for those considering how to save on energy bills.

Of course, the U850 is a mini-PC, so let’s talk size. The main body is 127mm x 127mm, standing at just 53.1mm high and weighing 0.5KGs. The U850 also features four USB 3.1 ports, one full-featured USB Type-C port, and a power-only secondary USB Type-C port.

You’ll also find an HDMI 2.0 output and a DisplayPort, which, when combined with the USB Type-C video output, allows you to simultaneously use up to three monitors.

The Minisforum U850 is set for launch in April 2021 and will retail for $660.

Mini-PCs Offer Versatile Solutions

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, computer and laptop sales have rocketed. The surge in work from home schemes and families in lockdown has sent demand soaring. Some sectors are still struggling to catch up to demand.

As with the other sectors, mini-PC sales have also increased. The tiny form factor machines offer similar computing power to their much larger alternatives. Due to its size, a mini-PC is also extremely versatile. You can even find mini-PCs for gaming, too.
