YouTube TV is about to get better, with the launch of a new add-on pack that will bring 4K streaming, offline viewing, and unlimited concurrent streaming to the service.
What Is YouTube TV?
YouTube TV is cable-free live TV alternative. It has over 85 channels of entertainment, news, live and sports, and more. It’s available nationwide in the US.
Some of the available channels include ABC, CBS, Fox, and Comedy Central, and it starts at $64.99/month. You can cancel whenever you want and there’s no annual membership.
Networks like HBO Max and Starz can be added in for additional cost, as can some sports networks.
It also includes unlimited cloud DVR storage space, along with rewind, fast-forward, and pause capability.
Compared to traditional cable, YouTube claims you can save $500/year because it has no hidden fees—there’s no cost to rent a box, broadcast in HD, cancel, and so on.
YouTube TV Adds 4K, Offline Viewing, and Unlimited Streams
As announced on the YouTube blog, YouTube TV will get various new features via “a new add-on option”.
This will give you the ability to watch shows in 4K resolution and download them to your DVR to watch later offline.
While YouTube itself supports 4K videos, this would be the first time that 4K content has been available via YouTube TV.
It will also let you watch unlimited concurrent streams, so that everyone under one roof can watch YouTube TV on different devices. Of course, while the functionality is designed for families, you could also split a subscription between a group and take advantage of the unlimited streams.
Currently, a YouTube TV subscription only allows three streams and six accounts per household.
It’s unknown what the cost of this package will be. When Gizmodo contacted YouTube for comment, it would only say that these perks are “an optional add-on for members.”
It’s also not clear when this new option will be available. The blog post in which it was announced was mostly about new features coming this year, but again the YouTube spokesperson had nothing to share.
Cut the Cord With YouTube TV
If you’re a cord-cutter, YouTube TV is a great service to sign up to, and the addition of 4K content makes it even more enticing.
Of course, it’s not the only alternative to cable TV. There are many more out there, both paid and free, to suit all interests.
