Amazon Is Opening a Hair Salon in London to Trial New Technology

When you want to dye your hair a new color at the salon, you’ve probably felt the dread of wondering if it’ll turn out as you want it to look. Amazon wants to take the awkwardness out of the hair salon by allowing you to digitally color your hair before you sit down for a dye.

Amazon’s Step Into the Hairdressing Industry

Engadget broke the news about this development. Amazon is trialing this new technology in east London alongside professionals from Neville Hair and Beauty.

The digital salon portion of the experience will act as a giant virtual mirror. You can use it to select different hair colors, and the mirror will digitally dye your hair so you can see what it’d look like once it’s done.

Not only that, but the virtual mirror will also let you know about hair products that you can buy. It’ll even let you physically point at products and it’ll let you know who made it, how much it is, and provide short videos on the product so you can learn more.

If you really like the look of a product, the digital mirror will give you a QR code. Once scanned, the code will take you to the Amazon store page for that product so you can read reviews and get some for yourself.

People who are keeping tabs on Amazon’s ventures will be reminded of Amazon Go, a retail shop that automatically charges people when they leave the store with produce. The idea behind the model is that it removes the need for cashiers; just take what you need and walk out of the door.

However, Amazon’s new salons won’t be at this technological level. The virtual mirror will be the only digital aspect of the salon; the rest will be covered by human beings. As such, there’s no need to worry about robotic Sweeney Todds trimming your hair.

Neville Hair and Beauty is currently trying out the technology with employees and hopes to open its doors to the public soon. Once it’s open for business, expect to pay between £50-250 for a haircut.

Some New Tech to Dye For

Dying your hair can be a worrisome experience, but Amazon is working toward making it an easier experience for all. Not only that, but you can buy hair products right there in the salon seat.

However, Amazon isn’t the first to use this technology. Mobile apps like ChouChou and YouCam Makeup let you play around with your photos and see what you’d look like with a new hairdo.
