At CES 2019, My Arcade has unveiled several new Mini Player devices. These mini collectible arcade units pack fully-playable classic arcade games into a mini replica unit, complete with the joysticks and buttons you remember.
New Mini Player options include Bubble Bobble, Elevator Action, and Ms. Pac-Man. Each features a backlit display, built-in adjustable speakers, and a headphone jack. You can power the devices using either a micro-USB cable or four AA batteries.
When we tried the devices, we liked the authentic look of the arcade cabinets. Playing games from this era on modern displays often results in a blurry or stretched look, but we’re pleased to say that’s not an issue on these cabinets.
You’ll be able to purchase these new arcade units in April 2019 for $34.99 each.
If mini arcade units don’t interest you, My Arcade has also announced more Pocket Player devices. These are small units, similar to a Game Boy or other handheld systems, that play several classic arcade games each. They’re a great way to have some fun on your commute or in other short bursts.
New Pocket Player units include Dig Dug, Galaga, and Ms. Pac-Man. Like the Mini Players, they’ll become available in April 2019 for $34.99 apiece.
Finally, My Arcade plans to release the Retro Champ device. This allows you to load existing NES or Famicom cartridges and play them anywhere on a 7-inch screen. A rechargeable battery allows you to play for dozens of hours on a single charge.
If you prefer to play on the TV, the console also includes an HDMI port so you can enjoy your games on the big screen. And since these old cartridges are sometimes unreliable, the Retro Champ includes a cleaning kit so you can take care of them.
You’ll be able to buy the Retro Champ in June 2019 for $79.99. If you have lots of old cartridges lying around, but your NES stopped working long ago, this is an affordable way to breathe life into them again.
We’re excited that companies like My Arcade are continuing to provide ways to make retro gaming accessible to everyone. Whether you played these games when they were new or want to enjoy them for the first time, these products provide a cool collectible that’s fully playable too. They’re a bit expensive for a single small game, but the nostalgia attached makes it an attractive package.
