Japanese trees synchronize allergic pollen release over immense distances

Researchers used tree pollen data for 120 sites across Japan to observe pollen synchronicity at regional and national levels. Greater synchronicity was found among eastern regions than western regions. There was intermittent synchronization nationwide, with yearly changes such as perfect synchronization (2009-2010), perfect desynchronization (2015-2016), and mixed states. These findings can be used to improve prediction accuracy of pollen forecasting in Japan.
