The Best Games on PlayStation Now | MakeUseOf

For those who aren’t aware, PlayStation Now is a subscription service offered by Sony. For $9.99/month you get access to around 800 games, with new titles added regularly.

There are some killer games included in the service which you can stream or download onto your PS4. You can also use PS Now to play PlayStation games on your PC.

PlayStation Now offers a wide variety of game genres, including platformers and puzzlers. Triple-AAA flagship titles are present alongside relatively unknown-yet-cool indie games.

The problem with having so many games to choose from is deciding which to play. So, to help you decide, here are the best games to play on PlayStation Now.

PS Now is loaded with awesome fighting titles. Sadly, Tekken isn’t included here, but there are plenty of other games to get your pugilistic fix. Here’s what we’ve got.

Deservedly one of the top 10 highest-selling Capcom games of all time (even beating Monster Hunter in sales), Street Fighter 5 is an awesome rendition of the classic beat-em-up.

The fifth installment added four new characters to the game, keeping classic characters like Ken and Ryu for the SF purists. The game also introduced the V-Gauge, which introduces new abilities for each character during a fight. Hadouken!

Developed by Sega AM2, Fighting Vipers was originally released back in 1996 for the mighty Sega Saturn. So, if you want a serving of nostalgia alongside your polygonal pit-brawling, you’ve come to the right place.

The arenas in this game are enclosed for close-combat (unlike Virtua Fighter) and the game also features an armor mechanic to make things a little more interesting.

Everybody loves a good platform game and PS Now has lots of them to choose from. Sadly, you don’t have any of the Crash Bandicoot games here, but you can still enjoy loads of run-and-jump platforming action.

Ever wanted to play a game as a slice of bread? Yeah, we didn’t think so either until we laid our hands on the brilliant indie platformer I Am Bread.

Yes, the protagonist may be a baked product, but your job is to help this sliced superstar become toast and you’ll have plenty of dicey situations to contend with along the way. An excellent interpretation of the platform genre.

Retro-gaming enthusiasts will remember Q*Bert. The funnel-faced cube-hopper first saw the light of day in an arcade cabinet. It has been ported to myriad consoles and computers before Q*Bert Rebooted finally made it to the PS4.

You’ll be pleased to know that you can play both the original and rebooted versions via the same game stream.

We have chosen “driving” over “racing” as some of the best car games on PSNow aren’t technically racers. However, if you are a speed-demon, then jump in the driver’s seat, and burn some rubber.

Originally released as an arcade game, Crazy Taxi was ported to the Sega Dreamcast in 2000 and has to be one of the best point-racing games out there.

As you might have guessed from the name, you play a taxi driver who needs to deliver passengers to their location in the allotted time. With bonus points for silly stunts and crazy crashes. A timeless game.

If drifting around doglegs is your bag, then PS Now has the 2019 rendition of the World Rally Championships game—WRC 8—for you to play.

The game features a fully revitalized career mode and some of the best depictions of weather that we’ve ever seen in a game. Have you got what it takes to zip around icy tracks without bailing into the wintery Värmland scenery?

If you ask us, there’s nothing better than scaring yourself silly with a good old horror game. If scary movies (like these scary movies to watch on Netflix) are your go-to genre, then horror games will undoubtedly be on your list of must-plays. Here’s a couple of pixelated petrifiers to have you diving behind the sofa.

Add a horror twist to the already desolate loneliness of outer space and you’ve got yourself a recipe for a brilliant game. Fortunately, Visceral Games flexed its muscles of mortification and delivered Dead Space 3.

The third installment in the series sees you playing as Isaac Clarke as he heads to an other-worldly frozen tundra to take on the hideous Necromorph and Marker foes.

Resident Evil: Code Veronica was originally released on the Sega Dreamcast and is arguably one of the best Resident Evil games to have seen the light of day.

You play as Claire and Chris Redfield, names you will know from previous excursions. However, unlike the previous titles in the series, this one takes place in a gothic Antarctic setting which works well to add to the terror.

Shoot ’em ups are one of the most popular game genres around. No surprise there, as what could be more fun than taking out enemies with the most ridiculous of arsenals? Check these out if you’re a fan of run and gun or scrolling shooters.

SNK is arguably the master of the side-scrolling run-and-gun style of shooter. So, it goes without saying that we would include the epic Metal Slug 3 here. Players pit their wits against a constant barrage of enemies to unload bullets into.

This was the first of the Metal Slug games to give players a choice on which path to follow to complete the level. Delivering brilliantly frenzied fun.

We couldn’t have a “best games” list without including possibly one of the most important game franchises of all time. R-Type Dimensions is a reboot of both R-Type and R-Type II, so you’ll be familiar with the game if you know the originals. Dimensions lets you play the original 2D games or 3D souped-up versions of the classics.

RPGs are great if you like to invest your time in crafting a story as much as playing a game. This genre tends to offer plenty of gameplay as you immerse yourself in a different world altogether. Check these RPGs out on PS Now.

Fallout 3 is the first game in the Fallout series to be played from the first-person perspective. It takes place in an open-world where, aside from main quests, you are at liberty to explore of your own accord. Getting lost in Capital Wasteland around a post-apocalyptic Washington D.C. is one of the game’s strongest qualities.

You can also play Fallout: New Vegas and Fallout 4 on PS Now, so this makes an excellent gateway game.

If you like classics such as the Suikoden and Final Fantasy games, then you’ll love the turn-based RPG Okage: Shadow King. The game puts you in control of Ari, on a quest to find his missing sister.

Gameplay mechanics are similar to many other turn-based RPGs, with characters and enemies having hit points and attack points to head into battle.

Sports games are immensely popular; you only have to look at the NBA series to see that. Fortunately, PS Now has a decent selection of sporting titles. Here are a couple of the best sports games to play.

If you enjoyed the PGA Tour games backed by Tiger Woods and (latterly) Rory McIlroy, then The Golf Club 2019 is probably the closest you’re going to get to that unless you buy PGA Tour 2K21. This is an excellent golf game, and the genre is perfect to play for extended periods. See you in the clubhouse.

Extreme sports are great fun to both watch and take part in. But they’re pretty darn cool in video games too. Steep is an excellent example of an extreme sports game, allowing players to explore a huge open-world mountain range as a skier, snowboarder, paraglider, or wingsuit flyer.

This is an exhilarating game, even if you are sat on the sofa playing it!

So, there we have it. If you’re not already firing up PlayStation Now, then we’re giving you a virtual shake and sending you off to your gaming chair with immediate effect. There are some awesome games included with PS Now, so we hope our list helps you zero in on the best titles.
