How to Turn a Photo Upside Down in Word, Apple Pages, and Google Docs

Want to use a photo in your document but it’s in the wrong orientation? You can turn your photo upside from your word processing program itself. Most word processors including Microsoft Word, Apple Pages, and Google Docs let you rotate and turn your photos upside down without leaving the document.

You can do this exercise just for fun, too. Here’s how to do that.

Microsoft Word has many image editing features built into it, and one of these lets you turn your photos upside down.

You don’t need to manually drag the image or bring it to a certain position. The only thing you need to do to turn your photo upside down is to enter a value in a box. Here we show how to do that:

  1. Open your document with Word, click the Insert tab, select Picture, and add a photo of your choice to your document.
  2. Select your photo by clicking on it. Then, click the Picture Format tab at the top.
  3. You should now see all the actions that you can perform on your photo. To rotate your photo upside down, click the Rotate Objects option and select More Rotation Options.
  4. A box will open on your screen letting you rotate your image. Bring your cursor to the Rotation field, type 180, and click OK at the bottom.

Your photo should now appear upside down in your document.

If you don’t like it and you want to revert your changes, press Ctrl + Z (Windows) or Command + Z (Mac) and that will undo the changes.

Turn a Photo Upside Down in Apple Pages

Apple Pages offers many features that you would also find in Microsoft Word. It also has a specific option to rotate your images.

Like the Word procedure, you need to type a rotation angle and that’ll do the job for you:

  1. Open a Pages document, click the Insert option at the top, and select Choose. Alternatively, press the Command + Shift + V keyboard shortcut. This will let you add a photo to your document.
  2. Navigate to the image that you want to turn upside down and double-click on it.
  3. Once the image is available in Pages, click on it so it’s selected.
  4. Click the Arrange tab on the right sidebar.
  5. At the bottom of the pane, you will find an option that says Angle under the Rotate section. Enter 180 in the Angle box and press Enter.

Turn a Photo Upside Down in Google Docs

More and more people are turning to Google Docs to get things done. If you’re one of those users and you prefer this online office suite, you can use the tool itself to turn your pictures upside down in your documents.

There are actually two ways for you to do the task in Google Docs.

1. Manually Rotate the Photo So It’s Turned Upside Down

One way to turn your image upside down in Google Docs is to manually drag the corners of the image. If you prefer this method, here’s how to use it:

  1. Launch a Google Docs document, click Insert, select Image, and add an image to your document.
  2. Click on your image and you’ll see blue boxes at each corner of the image.
  3. At the very top of your image, you have a blue circle box. Click and hold on it and you will be able to rotate your image. Keep rotating the image until it’s turned upside down.

2. Specify a Rotation Angle to Turn a Photo Upside Down

Another way to make your image appear upside down is to specify an angle for the image rotation. You then don’t need to manually drag the corners of your image to do the task.

You can rotate your photo upside down with this method as follows:

  1. Click on your image so it’s selected, click the three-dots at the bottom of the image, and select Size & rotation.
  2. On the right sidebar, click Size & Rotation to view more options.
  3. Put your cursor in the Angle box under Rotate, type 180, and press Enter.

Your chosen image should turn upside down.

If you want to revert the change, type 0 in the Angle box and hit Enter.

WordPad and Dropbox Paper may not be as popular as the aforementioned programs for creating documents, but they still do a pretty good job of creating many types of documents.

If you’re looking to turn your photos upside down with these programs, you would be disappointed to know that there’s no feature to do that in these apps.

WordPad only offers a limited number of options to work with images in your documents. The option to rotate your image so it looks upside down is missing.

Dropbox Paper also lacks the feature. As of this writing, you can’t turn your pictures upside down.

For now, one way to revert your images to the proper position is to process your images with an image editor first. Once you’ve rotated your photo in an app, you can then embed it in your document.

There may not be any reason to turn your images upside down. But now you know how to correct an image if it appears like that in your document. These three popular word processors can manage basic image editing tasks and you don’t need to rely on any third-party image editors.

If there are other issues with your images, you can use one of the many photo editing apps to fix and enhance the visual appearance of your photos before including it in your professional report or document.
