Netflix is increasing the price of two of its plans in the US. The change comes into effect immediately for new subscribers, or over the next two months for existing users.
How Much Does Netflix Cost Now?
In the US only, Netflix is raising the price of its standard plan to $13.99/month from $12.99 and its premium plan to $17.99/month from $15.99.
The cost of the basic tier remains at $8.99/month.
The standard and premium plans are the only ones that let you watch on multiple devices at once and stream in HD.
If you sign up for a new Netflix subscription today, you will be charged the increased rates.
Existing subscribers will be notified 30 days prior to the end of their billing cycle about the increase.
Netflix said in a statement:
We understand people have more entertainment choices than ever and we’re committed to delivering an even better experience for our members. We’re updating our prices so that we can continue to offer more variety of TV shows and films.
The last time Netflix raised prices in the US was in January 2019, which it did across all plans and marked the highest percentage increase since the service began.
These latest price changes aren’t unexpected. Earlier in October 2020, Netflix raised prices in Canada. It’s unknown whether prices will increase elsewhere.
Netflix now exists in a crowded streaming market. One of the ways it hopes to stand out is through its strong line-up of original and third-party TV shows.
