Google Calls Pixel 5 Body Gap Issue Part of Phone’s Design

There’s an issue many users are facing with the Google Pixel 5. Buyers all around the internet are reporting a gap between the body of their Pixel 5 and the screen. However, it appears that this may not be a problem at all, as Google claims that the issue is entirely standard and is “a normal part of the design.”

Of course, Google’s claim provides users with some reassurance, but for those concerned about their phone looking pristine, Google weighing in does nothing to resolve the problem.

What’s the Deal With The Pixel 5 Screen Gap Issue?

Google released the Pixel 5 recently, and as the phone has made its way into the hands of more users, quite a few are reporting a gap between the screen’s plastic bumper and the coated aluminum frame of the phone.

The issue is unsightly for anyone who cares about having a perfect-looking phone. However, even for users who don’t care about the aesthetics, there’s concern regarding the IP-rated water resistance, as there needs to be a complete seal to keep water out of the device.

Once it wasn’t just a few isolated cases, Google was forced to step in and investigate the problem. After all, it’s not just about the phone’s look at this point, with users concerned whether their phone would still be resistant to liquids.

A Google representative took to the company’s support forum to speak on the issue:

We’ve had a chance to investigate units from customers and, combined with our quality control data from the factory, we can confirm that the variation in the clearance between the body and the display is a normal part of the design of your Pixel 5. There is no effect on the water and dust resistance or functionality of your phone. We will work with customers on an individual basis to address any concerns they may have.

Since it appears that Google considers the issue part of the phone’s design, it shouldn’t be a cause for alarm for buyers. If you happen to own a Pixel 5, or you’re in the market for one, you shouldn’t let this gap keep you from enjoying your device.

If you find it unsightly, you can undoubtedly put a case on your phone to cover the gap and make the phone look nicer. You can also reach out to Google, as the company did say it would work with customers on an individual basis to address concerns.

The Google Pixel 5 Is Making Waves

Outside of small gaps between the screen, the Pixel 5 has mostly positive reviews from around the web. If you’re in the market for a smartphone that doesn’t cost too much, you should give it a look.
