Xbox Series X Owners Are Reporting Disc Drive Faults | MakeUseOf

In a week mired by problems for Microsoft, the Xbox Series X/S issues keep tumbling in. This time, people who bought a launch-day console are reporting problems with loading discs into their brand new machine.

Broken Xbox Series X Optical Drives

Twitter has once again jumped on an issue that some owners of the new Xbox are experiencing. The problem seems to be faulty disc drives.

While the Xbox Series S is digital-only, the Xbox Series X can accept data via its optical drive. This is how most users of the console will be installing and loading their new games.

However, when Series X gamers have tried installing games from disc, they have noticed issues with the console’s disc drive.

What Are the Problems With Series X Disc Drives?

There appear to be several different problems doing the rounds (and no, we’re not talking about vape smoke billowing out of the top of a Series X).

Firstly, as reported by Xbox fan and Twitter user @drknickel, in some instances the Xbox Series X flat out refuses to even accept a disc.

The gamer posted a video of himself attempting to insert Dirt 5 into his Xbox Series X, only for the disc to lay dormant, the drive not automatically drawing the disc in as you would expect.

The second problem being reported is that of a whirring and stuttering sound emanating from the Series X once a game disc has been inserted.

Twitter user @ScottJamison313 posted a video of his Xbox Series X. There is a game disc in the drive and the console appears to be making a rather worrying clicking sound.

In the associated tweet, Jamison has asked the Xbox Support Twitter account for help regarding the issue, which sounds like something akin to a plague of cicadas.

Who Does the Disc Drive Problem Affect?

This is only going to be an issue for owners of the Series X. Out of the two next-gen Microsoft consoles, the Series X is the only one with an optical drive. Those who netted a Series S won’t experience the same issues.

That is assuming, of course, that the problem actually is with the disc drive and not down to another hardware component failing.

What Will the Next Series X/S Problem Be?

As more and more people receive their new Xbox Series console, more and more issues are likely to surface over on Twitter, with users posting the problems they experience in the hope that Xbox Support can help.

With the PS5 due to be released imminently, and the battle of the next-gen consoles heating up, expect your feeds to be flooded with videos of teething problems for Team Sony, too.
