How to Download Music From Spotify to Your Phone

Spotify offers a great platform for streaming music. However, you don’t want to lose that music the moment you’re not online.

For uninterrupted musical enjoyment, let’s explore how to download music on Spotify for offline play.

Requirements to Download Music on Spotify

To download music on Spotify, you need to be a Spotify Premium member. Sadly, free users are limited to downloading podcasts on their phones.

As a Spotify Premium member, you can download your music all at once from either albums or playlists. Then you’re free to listen to all your music without any online connection.

Spotify Download Limitations

There are two other conditions to be aware of.

To keep your music downloaded, you need to go online at least once every thirty days. Spotify uses this to check that your account still has Premium access. If you miss the deadline, Spotify will automatically remove the songs from your device.

There’s also a 10,000 song download limit across a maximum of five devices. If you download anything onto a sixth device, you’ll also lose prior downloads. Specifically, Spotify clears out downloads of the device that hasn’t been used for the longest period of time.

While in Offline mode, Spotify keeps you posted on what content you have access to. If you tap on just a followed artist (no song or album likes), Spotify will remind you to go online with a pop-up notification.

If you browse artists, playlists, or albums with non-downloaded music, they’ll either appear grayed out or remain hidden. If you want to unhide songs, enable Show unplayable songs under Playback.

If you decide you want any unavailable songs, you can still set-up downloads in Offline mode. Simply tap your Spotify’s download button to schedule a download.

Within Your Library, you’ll see waiting to download prompts next to any queued playlists, artists, or albums. Once you disable Offline mode, Spotify will automatically download your songs.

When it comes to sorting currently downloaded music, Spotify’s management also hinges around its download button. If you need to clear space or redownload to another storage device, tap the toggle button or green arrow (depending on your device) on any already downloaded music to delete it. If you need to redownload, it’s as simple as tapping the respective button type once more.

While Spotify aims to keep its process intuitive and largely universal, you can always further optimize it. To have the best control over your music collection, check out how to manage your Spotify playlists.
