Report: iPad Pro Will Get OLED Displays, But Not Until 2022

Apple has been making iPhones with a gorgeous OLED display since 2017’s iPhone X. This year’s iPhone 12 series marked the first time that all of Apple’s new handsets came with OLED screens, which offer a number of advantages over LCD screens—including superior contrast, higher brightness, a wider color range, and more.

Don’t go expecting an OLED iPad Pro any time soon, however. According to a research note by Barclays analysts Blayne Curtis, Thomas O’Malley, Tim Long, and associates, an OLED iPad Pro isn’t likely to ship until 2022 at the earliest. That would be approximately half a decade since the display technology landed on the iPhone.

Bringing OLED Displays to iPad

The research note, which was shared by MacRumors, contradicts a recent report by TheElec, stating that Apple had an iPad Pro with OLED display scheduled for the latter half of 2021.

Apple’s current iPad Pro features an LCD display. Apple is rumored to be switching to Mini-LED displays for the iPad at some point in the near future, although it seems that OLED is the eventual destination.

Apple’s latest iPad Pro update in March 2020 was a fairly minor upgrade. Its biggest changes were an increase in RAM and storage options, plus a new LiDAR sensor used for augmented reality capabilities, redesigned camera module, and A12Z processor.

Along with the newer iPhones, Apple also uses OLED screens for its Apple Watch. But from the sound of things, fans will be waiting a bit longer before that screen technology finds its way to iPad.
