US President Donald Trump is facing a wave of bans from social networks. Twitch has since hopped on the bandwagon, suspending Trump’s account for an undisclosed amount of time.
Twitch Responds to Washington D.C. Protests
The Amazon-owned game streaming service, Twitch, has locked President Trump’s account following the protests at the Capitol. A Twitch spokesperson announced this move in a statement to Bloomberg, saying:
In light of yesterday’s shocking attack on the Capitol, we have disabled President Trump’s Twitch channel. Given the current extraordinary circumstances and the President’s incendiary rhetoric, we believe this is a necessary step to protect our community and prevent Twitch from being used to incite further violence.
Due to the ban, Trump will no longer be able to use his Twitch channel. The platform may reconsider letting Trump back on Twitch after he leaves office, but until then, it’s unclear when the ban will end.
Twitch’s ban comes after Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram indefinitely suspended Trump’s account. Facebook and Instagram’s ban on Trump will likely last until President-elect Joe Biden assumes office.
Trump Faces Backlash Across Social Media
When Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Twitch lift the ban on Trump, he won’t be welcomed back with open arms. He’ll likely have to consider solely using an alternative social media network, like Parler, in order to avoid permanent bans in the future.
