Long-Awaited AirTags Could Finally Debut in March

Apple’s AirTags, a miniature location tracker for keys and other small objects, have been rumored as just around the corner since 2019. However, six weeks into 2021, they have still yet to be announced by Apple—let alone to start shipping out to customers.

That could well change next month, according to perennial Apple tipster Jon Prosser. In a tweet sent on Friday, February 12, Prosser claimed that, “AirTags are still on for March. Haven’t heard of any further delays this time.”

What to Expect From AirTags

Prosser is referring to a previous delay he reported late last year, prior to Apple’s October 13 media event. At the time, Prosser noted on Twitter that he had heard from his (seemingly well-situated) sources that, “Apple has pushed back the announcement and launch of AirTags to March of 2021.” Coming up to half a year later, it seems that no further delays will stall the release of the AirTags. One would hope, at least.

AirTags will reportedly use Apple’s ultra wideband technology to let iPhones determine their precise location with a high degree of accuracy. They will supposedly use both audio cues and an augmented virtual marker to show exactly where the object, attached to the AirTags, is situated.

Finding the individual AirTags will be done through the iOS “Find My” app, which also allows users to track their iPhones, iPads, Macs, and other Apple devices. The AirTags will be Apple’s rival to popular Bluetooth tracking products from companies such as Tile.

Apple has yet to announce a March special event, at which the AirTags could be announced. However, if it does host one that will be in keeping with recent years. For six out of the last 10 years, Apple has hosted an event in March at which it showed off new products.

Last year, an event was heavily rumored, but did not take place, most likely due to the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in the U.S. and elsewhere. Now that Apple’s switched to virtual events, though, this would not stop it from staging another event next month. Alternatively, Apple could announce the AirTags via press release.

Expect a New iPad Pro As Well

This may not be the only new Apple product next month, either. Prosser additionally responded to a question about Apple’s next iPad Pro, by saying it is “also [set for] March, as far as I know.”

While Prosser has been wrong before, he has an overall impressive record when it comes to accurate Apple announcements. Will the AirTags and next-gen iPad Pro be among them? There’s not long to wait until we find out.
