Trello Receives Complete Design Overhaul

In 2011, developers Joel Spolsky and Michael Pryor created the first prototype for Trello (then called Trellis) under Fog Creek Software. The app was eventually sold to Atlassian in 2017, and would have 50 million users two years later.

Fast forward to today, and Trello is rolling out the biggest update it’s ever had.

Trello Changes How It Visualizes Your Data

On February 16, productivity app Trello to its official blog and social media platforms to announce a major update that not only completely changes its visual style, but also adds a handful of new features.

“We are building for an entirely new era of teamwork—where people live in different locations, but work stays connected. This is the beginning of a whole new Trello,” Pryor writes.

You can now customize your Trello cards even more than before, with the all-new card types:

  • Link cards – displays previews of supported third-party services (e.g. Dropbox, Google Docs, YouTube, etc.)
  • Board cards – renders a visual link to another board for referencing other projects within projects
  • Mirror cards – clones one card to appear on multiple boards

It’s a little surprising to see even more changes made to cards, considering Trello added card colors and covers in June 2020. But it’s always great to see increased functionality on top of customization options.

In addition to the new cards, if you’re a Business Class and Enterprise tier Trello user, you can change how you look at your team’s project information through the new different “view” options.

Trello’s original whiteboard-style view is referred to as the board view, while the new options are the timeline, table, dashboard, calendar, and map views.

The timeline view allows you to go over your team’s pipeline for easy management of members’ shifts and workload. The table view pulls cards from your team’s selected boards and sorts them into a spreadsheet list.

You can view key metrics such as due dates, assignments, and team insights in the dashboard view, and plan the month ahead in the calendar view. Finally, the map view allows you to see the location of all of your board’s cards.

What Do App Do You Use to Manage Your Projects?

Trello is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, and it’s marking the occasion with some of the biggest changes the app has seen since its inception.

With the rise of project management apps such as Asana, ClickUp, and so many others, it’s only through introducing new innovative features (such as the ones included in this update) that Trello will be able to stay competitive.
