When Is the PS5 VR Headset Being Released?

Attention to all virtual reality lovers, Sony just announced some bittersweet news. The good news, Sony confirmed that it’s currently working on a new VR headset for the PlayStation 5. But don’t get too excited just yet; the bad news is that it isn’t coming any time soon.

Sony also confirmed that any new PlayStation Virtual Reality system, better known as PSVR, that the company is developing wouldn’t launch during 2021. We still have to wait, but for how long, exactly?

When Is Sony Releasing the New PS5 VR Headset?

After saying that there were no plans for PSVR games on PS5, Sony surprised us with the announcement that the company is working on a new VR headset and controller compatible with the PlayStation 5.

Sadly, we don’t know exactly when this new system is going to launch as of right now. All we know is that Sony isn’t releasing it this year. The company had this to say in a post on the PlayStation Blog:

There’s still a lot of development underway for our new VR system, so it won’t be launching in 2021. But we wanted to provide this early update to our fans, as the development community has started to work on creating new worlds for you to explore in virtual reality.

Unfortunately, Sony doesn’t say when the next-generation PS VR system is actually coming, but it’s highly likely that we’ll see it launch during 2022 since the developers had already started working on creating new games and titles.

What Else Do We Know About the Upcoming PS VR Headset?

Since the next-gen VR headset is still in development, we don’t have specific additional details about it. However, Sony mentioned a few improvements we should expect from the next VR system.

Taking into consideration what the company learned from the current PS VR system launched for the PS4, Sony is working on improving the overall user experience across several categories.

Sony also confirmed that the new system will connect to the PS5 with a single cord for a more simple setup that enables a high-fidelity visual experience.

The next-gen VR controller will also see significant upgrades, borrowing some key features from the PS5 DualSense controller, while still focusing on great ergonomics. This is what Sony said about it:

One of the innovations we’re excited about is our new VR controller, which will incorporate some of the key features found in the DualSense wireless controller, along with a focus on great ergonomics. That’s just one of the examples of future-proof technology we’re developing to match our vision for a whole new generation of VR games and experiences.

Hopefully, it is a bit more hardy than the DualSense controllers, some of which are experiencing a drifting defect.
