A new member is joining Boston Dynamic’s lineup of commercial robots. No, this one doesn’t resemble a dog, nor is it capable of mastering dance moves—it’s designed to efficiently unload trucks and build pallets in warehouse environments.
Introducing Boston Dynamics’ Newest Robot
Boston Dynamics is known primarily for Atlas and Spot, two innovative bots that are designed to resemble a human and dog, respectively. But now, the company has unveiled Stretch, a rolling robot sporting an outstretched arm equipped with a “smart gripper.”
In a post on the Boston Dynamics website, the company said that “Stretch is a versatile mobile robot for case handling, designed for easy deployment in existing warehouses.” Boston Dynamics also included a video, which shows how Stretch can smoothly pick up boxes from a pile, and then transition them to a conveyer belt.
Stretch is built for use in tight spaces and has the ability to roll over ramps and avoid obstacles. It can also handle many types of boxes at different speeds, thanks to the smart gripper’s “advanced sensing and controls.”
Stretching the Limits of Robotics
When Stretch is officially available for purchase in 2022, it will likely become an integral tool at warehouses around the world. It may even help prevent the injuries that come along with heavy lifting, which can take the burden off of existing workers.
