You Will Soon Be Able to Use Live Caption on Chromebooks

Google recently made its Live Caption feature available to Google Chrome users. The company now seems to be planning to bring this feature to Chrome OS users as well.

So, if you have a Chromebook, it won’t be too long before you can transcribe the audio in real-time on your device.

Google’s Live Caption Feature

In case you don’t already know, Live Caption is a feature that transcribes your audio in real-time on your supported devices. This feature was earlier available on Google’s Pixel phones, and it was recently rolled out to Google Chrome.

Live Caption for Chromebooks

As first spotted by Android Police, Google is aiming to make Live Caption available in its Chromebooks sometime soon. A code referring to this feature has been found in the Chromium Gerrit, which is where new Chrome OS features are found before they roll out to stable releases.

The site also reports that they found a switch to enable Live Caption in Chrome OS Canary. Canary is the channel used for experimental Chrome OS features, and since Live Caption has already made it here, it’ll make its way to Chrome OS stable releases very soon.

Support for More Languages in Live Caption

Live Caption in Google Chrome currently only supports English. However, digging deeper into the Chromium code says that more languages are on the way to use in this feature.

These supported languages are likely going to be French, German, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish, in addition to English.

How to Use Live Caption on Chromebooks

There’s a difference between how you enable this feature in Google Chrome and Chrome OS. In the latter, you have Live Caption integrated into the audio slider instead of sitting on the media controls.
