Motherhood is filled with irony. You can be completely exhausted, hanging on by a thread and wide awake at 3 a.m. while simultaneously convincing yourself that having a fourth kid is a great idea. And there’s probably no day more ironic than Mother’s Day, when we’re feted for the loving caregivers that we are by having everyone jump on us at 7 a.m. with breakfast in bed when really we just want to sleep in and not be touched or talked to for an extended period of time.
It’s not that we don’t love our kids. We really, really, really do! Even when they’re asking for the 387th snack of the day, vice-gripped to our legs while we’re trying to make dinner, crying because their cup is the wrong colour and filling the kitchen with fart clouds. We love our families ferociously and for 364 days of the year we’re all in.
So why not give moms what they really want in 2021? After a particularly brutal pandemic year, it’s not brunch or mimosas or art or plants they’ll inevitably have to take care of that’s the object of their desire. It’s two words: peace and quiet. And these memes get the point across perfectly.
Hell hath no fury like a mom who can’t sleep in on Mother’s Day.
