Peloton Agrees to Voluntary Recall of Two of Its Treadmills

Do you own a Peloton Tread or Tread+? If so, you should apply for a refund from Peloton rightaway, as a recent product recall listed both products as unsafe for use.

Why Is Peloton Recalling Its Tread and Tread+ Treadmills?

The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has published a statement confirming the recall. The statement covers both the Tread and Tread+ models from Peloton.

If you own one of these products, the CPSC recommends you stop using it immediately and contact Peloton. The company should either give you a refund or a suitable replacement for your treadmill.

This move came after a child lost their life to a Peloton Tread+, alongside several injury reports from its users. Previously, Peloton fought to prevent a safety recall of its treadmill, but the company has since changed its stance and agreed to work with the CPSC.

Peloton’s CEO John Foley made a statement to apologize for the company’s past actions:

The decision to recall both products was the right thing to do for Peloton’s Members and their families. I want to be clear, Peloton made a mistake in our initial response to the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s request that we recall the Tread+. We should have engaged more productively with them from the outset. For that, I apologize.

Foley went on to say that he’ll work to make Peloton “an industry leader in product safety” and will work with the CPSC to “increase safety awareness for our Members.”

Robert S. Adler, Acting Chairman of the CPSC, also made a statement on the topic. He said the decision came from a lot of discussion between the organization and Peloton. He also mentions that the agreement involved weeks of “intense negotiation and effort” and thanked the CPSC’s technical staff who “worked tirelessly to protect consumers and to warn the public.”

As of right now, Peloton has stopped producing and selling the Tread+ and will now work on making it safer for public use. The company is also working on a repair kit for its Tread models and will reach out to owners of the product in the coming weeks.

The Right Move From Peloton

While Peloton originally fought against the recall of the Tread+ treadmill, it has since turned a new leaf and worked with the CPSC to protect its users. If you or someone you know owns one, ensure that people stop using it and get a refund or replacement ASAP.

If this news makes you feel uneasy about using Peloton models in the future, don’t worry. There are plenty of great Peloton alternatives out there that fit all kinds of niches.
