How to Host a Zoom Party and Connect With Your Loved Ones

Want to host an online party, but not sure how to use Zoom? Check out this easy to follow guide to get you started.

We are living in an era of online existence. In recent years, our use of digital technology has increased along with migrating our professional and personal lives online.

Thanks to huge developments in technology and online services, it is easier than ever to connect with loved ones for big life events, such as weddings, birthdays, and other celebrations remotely. This is where you can use a video calling service such as Zoom to connect to loved ones by hosting a virtual party.

What Is Zoom?

Zoom is a video conferencing app that allows users to make phone calls, video calls and host work meetings on their laptops, desktop computers, and cellphones, using an internet connection.

Why Is It Good for Hosting Online Parties?

Zoom is an easy-to-use app that is simple to set up and is ideal for gathering a large group of people together online who live in different physical locations. Zoom gives you the capability to call multiple recipients and see them all onscreen simultaneously, making it perfect for hosting a virtual party.

How Do I Get Started With Zoom?

Getting started with Zoom is relatively straightforward, as there are just two main steps to follow: First, you need to set up a Zoom account using your email address. Secondly, you need to download the Zoom software to your computer.

Setting Up Your Zoom Account

You need to set up a Zoom account to send meeting invitations and host your Zoom parties. You can sign up for a free Zoom account at Zoom.US. A basic account allows you to host up to 100 participants, hold video calls for up to 40 minutes at a time, and join unlimited one-on-one meetings, all for free.

Downloading Zoom Software

You can use Zoom on both Windows and Mac, as well as on Android and iOS. The web version of Zoom doesn’t have all the features, so we recommend using a downloaded desktop version for optimum use.

If you are plan to use Zoom for business purposes, it may be worth checking out the various paid-for plans available, but for intermittent personal use the free version should be sufficient to meet your needs.

Now That I Have an Account, How Do I Host a Party?

You have two options to host a party: “Host an Instant Meeting” or “Schedule a Meeting.”

Hosting an Instant Meeting

If you want to instantly connect with your friends and family, click on the small arrow next to “New Meeting” on your desktop Zoom app.

Here, you will find the option to copy the Meeting ID, or you can choose to copy an invitation message to send via email or instant messaging. The invitation message contains a link to the video call you will host, as well as the Meeting ID and Passcode, making it easy for your friends or family to join your online party.

To initiate your instant party, paste the invitation message into an email or instant messaging service such as Whatsapp and send to your chosen recipients. This will invite them to join your instant video call.

Scheduling a Meeting

If you want to organize a party in advance, you can choose to schedule a meeting and send out invitations for a chosen date and time to your recipients.

Here you have several options to organize and personalize your Zoom party, including:

  • The topic: You can name the occasion for you and your recipients
  • The date and time to host the event (don’t forget to set the correct time zone here)
  • Which Meeting ID to use: Choose from an auto-generated ID or your Personal Meeting ID
  • Security options: You can give recipients a passcode to access the video call, or you can choose to let in participants yourself from a virtual “waiting room.”
  • Video options: You can choose whether to include video or just voice in your call
  • Which calendar to send your invitation through

When scheduling your party, you will see a message that says, “Your Zoom Basic plan has a 40-minute limit.” If you want to host a Zoom party for longer than 40 minutes, you will need to create multiple meetings or host an instant meeting when your 40 minutes is up to continue the party.

What Features Can I Use in Zoom?

During a Zoom call, you have the ability to mute audio, hide videos and share your screen—all of which can be particularly useful if you’re doing something like a quiz, where you don’t want the other participants to hear or see your answer(s).

You also have the option to add a virtual background or filter to your own video, adding a touch of personalization and fun to your onscreen appearance. Check out the settings in your Zoom desktop to find more customizable options.

Facebook users can make voice and video calls via Facebook Messenger on both desktop and phone. Smaller calls of up to four participants work well on the phone, whereas Facebook Messenger Rooms can host up to 50 participants and is best suited to desktop use.
