An analysis of more than 2,400 women who did not have high blood pressure while pregnant found that about 1 in 10 were diagnosed with high blood pressure in the year after childbirth. Almost a quarter of the women who were diagnosed with high blood pressure were found to have elevated blood pressure more than 6 weeks after delivery. Cigarette smoking, being age 35 or older or having a Cesarean delivery were associated with a higher risk of developing postpartum high blood pressure for women without previous blood pressure issues.
