As the video streaming market heats up, companies need to do everything they can to stay afloat, even giants like Amazon. The e-retailer giant has just announced a partnership with MGM to get even more movies onto its platform.
Amazon and MGM’s New Deal
As reported in a press release on Business Wire, two giant companies in the entertainment industry have struck a deal that allows Amazon to show MGM’s movies on its platforms.
If you’re not sure what MGM is, it stands for “Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.” Do you know that “movie lion” that appears at the very start of many films and gets parodied a lot? That’s MGM’s lion.
Now, any movie that features the familiar roaring lion will appear on Amazon’s services. That’s a deal that contains over 4,000 titles and 17,000 TV shows; not a small drop in the pool at all.
The deal didn’t come cheap. Amazon had to pay $8.45 billion to bring MGM on board. However, the deal does mean that Amazon has a huge number of iconic shows and movies under its belt now.
Mike Hopkins, the Senior Vice President of Prime Video and Amazon Studios, is keen to discuss all the classic gems that are now making their way onto Amazon:
MGM has a vast catalog with more than 4,000 films—12 Angry Men, Basic Instinct, Creed, James Bond, Legally Blonde, Moonstruck, Poltergeist, Raging Bull, Robocop, Rocky, Silence of the Lambs, Stargate, Thelma & Louise, Tomb Raider, The Magnificent Seven, The Pink Panther, The Thomas Crown Affair, and many other icons—as well as 17,000 TV shows—including Fargo, The Handmaid’s Tale, and Vikings
As such, Amazon just scored a huge deal for their video streaming platform and put a lot of pressure on its competitors as a result. We’ll have to wait and see if Amazon can use this new leverage to encourage more people to subscribe to its streaming platforms.
Amazon Is Getting the Lion’s Share of an Amazing Deal
To bolster its position in the media streaming world, Amazon has bought MGM for $8.45 billion. Now, every TV show and movie with the iconic lion at the start will get a second life online.
If Amazon decides to add the movies to its Prime Video lineup, many people will get a boost to their movie collection without paying anything extra. It just goes to show that Amazon Prime is a lot more than just fast delivery.
